Virtual reality is on the rise in the experience of video games, with a lot of designers and developers since early 2016 when virtual reality began to attract attention and video games are developed to suit it. According to (Dautovic, 2021) 40.1% of the compound annual growth rate of the global gaming and entertainment market is linked to Virtual reality.

In the advent of the development of virtual reality based games, (Shafer et al., 2019) noted that spatial presence is a valuable factor when it comes to the enjoyment of video games. Spatial presence is defined as the feeling that the user is part of the environment’s built-in virtual world. One of the factors that can increase spatial presence is the introduction of interactive diegetic navigation aids within the game scene.

Background Research

Problem Statement

To explore how a specific interactive gameplay element, diegetic navigational aid, influences players’ mindsets during VR gameplay,
and to determine whether it affects their level of engagement and enjoyment.

Research Gaps

Approach

Firstly, address the relationship between immersion and enjoyment.
Secondly, establish a study to understand the interdependence between diegetic elements and enjoyment, while preserving the core idea of preservation of immersion.

Project Proposal

Project Purpose
To study effect on enjoyment levels in participants by comparing traditional navigation aids with interactive diegetic navigation aids, in a virtual reality game level.

Hypothesis
H0(null): There is no difference in enjoyment levels of the participant, between the two modes.
H1(alternative): There is a significant difference in enjoyment levels of participants, between the two modes.
